Description
The Domical (Gonbadi) design is one of the most celebrated patterns in the Persian rug tradition. It draws its inspiration from the architectural forms, tilework, and geometric and ornamental compositions of Iranian architecture, particularly the domes of historic Islamic monuments. The Single Medallion Domical handwoven carpet is likewise designed after the dome motifs found in Islamic architecture. The field radiates outward from the center in a symmetrical arrangement and is richly decorated with orderly geometric forms, floral motifs, and foliate ornamentation. At the center of the composition is a multi-pointed shamseh serving as the principal medallion, which establishes the primary compositional axis around which all other decorative elements are symmetrically organized. The rhythmic repetition of motifs, together with careful attention to symmetry and proportional balance, creates a harmonious and unified structure across the entire field. The principal border is ornamented with a continuous sequence of mihrab-inspired cartouches, forming a distinctive and cohesive frame around the composition. The integration of vegetal motifs throughout both the field and the borders, combined with the radial organization of the design, constitutes one of the defining characteristics of this pattern. The color palette is based primarily on shades of turquoise blue and lapis blue, complemented by cream, white, gold, beige, red, and orange. The use of multiple tonal variations of blue throughout the field and borders, together with lighter colors in the decorative details, clearly distinguishes the individual design elements and enhances the clarity of the ornamental composition. The harmonious balance between cool and warm colors, along with the gradual transition of blue tones from the center toward the outer edges, contributes to the overall visual unity and depth of the composition. It should be mentioned that this rug has Iran, Qom, Mousavi phrase in Persian that has been appended to the rug after weaving process
